Posted by

The Indian stock market will observe 15 trading holidays on weekdays in 2026, during which both the NSE and BSE will remain closed. Investors should note that while most major festivals result in a full-day closure, the market will feature a special “Muhurat Trading” session for Diwali and a rare Sunday trading session for the Union Budget.

Which holidays fall on weekends in 2026?

Several major holidays fall on Saturdays or Sundays in 2026, meaning they do not result in additional trading breaks. However, one exception is the special Muhurat Trading session held on Diwali.

  • Mahashivratri: February 15, 2026 (Sunday)
  • Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid): March 21, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Independence Day: August 15, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Diwali (Laxmi Pujan): November 08, 2026 (Sunday) โ€” Markets open for 1 hour of Muhurat Trading.

Why is the market open on Sunday, February 1, 2026?

The Indian stock exchanges will conduct a special live trading session on Sunday, February 1, 2026, to coincide with the Union Budget presentation. Standard market hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM) will apply. This allows the market to react in real-time to the fiscal announcements made by the Finance Minister, preventing a significant “gap” opening on Monday. (Read : Union Budget 2026 Expectations)

How do “Settlement Holidays” affect your money?

A settlement holiday is a day when trading is open, but clearing and settlement of funds and securities do not take place. If you sell shares on a settlement holiday, the proceeds will not be credited to your bank account until the following business day.

Key Settlement Holidays 2026:

  • Feb 19: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti
  • Apr 01: Annual Bank Closing
  • Aug 27: Id-E-Milad

Note for Option Traders: On settlement holidays, the “available margin” in your account may not reflect the previous day’s profits. Plan your liquidity accordingly.

Summary Checklist for 2026

  • Long Weekends: Look out for breaks in January (Republic Day), April (Good Friday), and May (Maharashtra Day) to plan your swing trades.
  • Budget Day: Mark Feb 1 for high-volatility trading despite it being a Sunday.
  • Muhurat Trading: Set an alarm for Nov 8 to participate in the symbolic one-hour session.
  • Brokerage Apps: Always check for circulars from brokers like Zerodha, Upstox, or Groww for specific session timings (e.g., MCX evening sessions)
